I’ve made a point of reading books by black women my entire life, and I’ve doubled down on my effort in the past two years to include more black women contemporary fiction and romance authors. Here is a collection of some of my favorite books by black women authors. These are all books I’ve read (or am currently reading them) and are listed roughly in the reverse order of when I read them.

You can purchase these books at The Carbonated Scholar Bookshop, which is an online bookstore that financially supports local independent bookstores and gives back to the book community, or, if you prefer, you can press on the links to be directed to Amazon. Alternatively, if you would like to support a black-owned bookstore, here is a list of black-owned bookstores taking online orders.

This is a great list, and I love how it crosses so many genres! But you are missing Octavia Butler! Keep reading, keep writing, and please keep sharing your book recommendations. — Erica
